Beyond canals and tulips: Amsterdam
Begijnhof: A Peaceful Sanctuary
My journey started in the heart of the city at Begijnhof, one of Amsterdam’s oldest and most serene courtyards. As I entered through the narrow doorway, I was greeted by a tranquil garden surrounded by charming houses, some dating back to the 14th century. The peaceful atmosphere was a stark contrast to the lively city outside, offering a moment of reflection and calm.
The Houseboat Museum: Life on the Water
Next, I ventured to one of Amsterdam’s most unique attractions—the Houseboat Museum. While the city’s canals are famous worldwide, the lives of those who call these waterways home often remain a mystery. The museum, housed in a real houseboat on the Prinsengracht, offers a fascinating glimpse into this alternative lifestyle. Stepping inside, I was amazed at how cozy and well-organized the space was, complete with a living room, kitchen, and bedroom. It’s a small museum, but it provides a wonderful insight into the practicality and charm of living on the water—a quintessentially Amsterdam experience.
Hortus Botanicus: A Green Escape
As my exploration continued, I found myself craving a bit of nature, and Hortus Botanicus provided the perfect green escape. This botanical garden, one of the oldest in the world, is a hidden oasis in the city, offering a lush retreat filled with exotic plants and serene pathways. The Palm House, with its towering tropical plants, was a highlight, but what truly enchanted me was the butterfly greenhouse.
Finally..
Amsterdam is a city that offers so much more than its famous landmarks. The hidden gems I discovered showed me a side of the city that’s rich in history, creativity, and charm. Each of these places, whether historical, artistic, or natural, added a new layer to my understanding of Amsterdam. This journey left me with a deeper connection to the city, and a desire to keep exploring the lesser-known treasures that lie around every corner.
De Pijp: A Neighborhood with Soul
To wrap up my exploration, I wandered through De Pijp, a lively neighborhood that felt worlds away from the tourist-heavy areas of Amsterdam. De Pijp is home to the famous Albert Cuyp Market, where I indulged in delicious street food and browsed through stalls selling everything from fresh produce to vintage clothing. The area’s narrow streets were lined with cozy cafés, vibrant street art, creating a lively atmosphere that was impossible to resist.
